Researchers have found that a squirrel’s memory is not great. A squirrel will bury nut after nut in preparation for the winter months. About 80% of the nuts buried sprout into saplings each spring. Not recalling where the nourishment is can be dangerous and during a difficult winter, it might make the difference between life or death. While the squirrel is scrounging for winter food beneath the snow, his stored treasure lays unused.
Since I took on the armor of God, I’ve found I’m not only content but most days my cup runneth over. But contentment is not always a safe place to be if we don’t heed the advice of Deuteronomy 8:10-14.
10“When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
These verses tell us three things:
- Praise God
- Don’t forget God
- Hold fast to His commandments, laws and decrees
One would think that contentment would not be a dangerous place but God’s Word warns us that our contentment can turn to complacency. And, therein lays the trap. If we are complacent about are daily relationship with our Heavenly Father, Satan can ensnare us easily. A weak spirit life is fertile ground for Satan.
Deuteronomy, verses 19-20 tell us the consequences of forgetfulness. 19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. 20 Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.” It doesn’t sugarcoat the results of a complacent spiritual life. Whether it’s a country or an individual, destruction happens to those that forget to praise God, those that neglect to remember Him and His promises, and those that don’t hold fast to His commandments.
As Believers, we must not forget where our treasures are buried.
Have you found yourself scrounging instead of remembering where your treasure lays? Do you days pass without a call to the God who provides all?
